ABOUT THE CONGRESS

The 1st African Biotechnology Congress 2024 on ‘Biotechnology for Sustainable Development of Africa’ will be organized by the Ethiopian Society of Biotechnology (ESoB) jointly with the Ethiopian Bio and Emerging Technology Institute (BETin) and in collaboration with other several partners. 

Holding the 1st African Biotechnology Congress, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, from June 4-7, 2024, ESoB aims at providing a platform for an African wide and international biotech communities for discussing and presenting cutting-edge Biotechnology sciences, emerging issues and challenges that the African continent is facing at this point in time. Of course, it is also to put forward various recommendations and offer future practical actions for the thriving African Biotech sector. 

The congress also brings together researchers and academicians, program managers as well as policy makers from across Africa and beyond to discuss current issues in Biotechnology and disseminate key research outputs. Moreover, it also serves as an important platform to advocate and raise public awareness towards the science of Biotechnology and its advancements in Ethiopia in 
particular and in the African continent in general.

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVE

To disseminate Biotechnology research findings to use as an input for program implementation. 
To share experience and best practices on current status of Biotechnology among regions, program implementers in the continent and with International speakers. 
To identify and communicate challenges of Biotechnology Policy and strategy to be a research priority for the academic and research communities. 
To raise awareness on Biotechnology and Biosafety and levels of commitment of the general public and academic institutions. 
To collaborate with International and International partners on Biotech research in Ethiopia.

President's Message

Make Sure That You Are Part of Africa’s Biotech Congress
Not to Be Missed!

I believe convening the 1st African Biotechnology Congress on ‘Biotechnology for Sustainable Development of Africa’ here in Addis Ababa from 4th to 7th of June 2024, has a special meaning to all of us.

This is because now is an incredibly exciting time when state and non-state actors in Africa have began embracing the science of biotechnology and its life-changing roles have been Now is an incredibly exciting recognized.  

Moreover, it is a time that agricultural activities are ushered in an era of practical biotechnological researches including recent Genome Editing projects on various crops by Africans, for Africans and on the African Soil, which have significantly contributed to the advancement of African development.

On the other hand, today, we face the reality that our societies in Africa have not yet sufficiently benefited from biotechnology researches and farmers are suffering from lack of technology, low productivity, widespread crop and animal diseases and impact of climate change while communities in other parts of the world are enjoying the fruits of biotech science.
Therefore, the 1st African Biotechnology Congress is expected to attract delegates from across Africa and beyond to discuss current developments and challenges of biotechnology in Africa and communicate key research outputs.

The congress also serves as an important platform to advocate and raise public awareness towards the science of Biotechnology and its advancements in Ethiopia in particular and in the African continent in general. It also promises very engaging and informative discussions and networking sessions.

The 1st African Biotechnology Congress 2024 will highlight on a diverse issues of modern biotechnology including – Plant Biotechnology, Animal Biotechnology, Industrial Biotechnology, Microbial Biotechnology, Environmental Biotechnology, Health Biotechnology, Bioinformatics and Omics (Genomics, Transcriptiomics, Proteomics, Metablomics), Food and Feed Biotechnology, Genome Editing and Synthetic Biology, Biopolicy, Biolaw, Bioethics, Biosafety and Biosecurity and Biotechnology Communication and Education.

Participants would also have an opportunity to engage with industry leaders in biotechnology and have the big pictures on how Africa’s biotech is advancing and how it continues to face various challenges. They will also learn about the exciting opportunities they are creating to remain vibrant and resilient in the ever-changing biotechnology world.
Attending the congress is an excellent opportunity to engage with some of the most experienced industry leaders, learn from their experience, and build networks for the future.
